GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG

The epic journey of gods, mortals and giants comes to a thunderous close. Houston Grand Opera concludes its historic four-part Ring cycle with Götterdämmerung, (Twilight of the Gods), the final opera in Wagner’s tetralogy. The heroic Siegfried gives Brünnhilde the ring as a token of their love, but they unexpectedly face challenges beyond their control. In the definitive act of self-sacrifice, Brünnhilde returns the universe to its natural order. Watch as the Rhine overflows, Valhalla burns, and the kingdom of the gods is destroyed.

Ginkgoa

She comes from New York; he lives in Paris. Her name is Nicolle Rochelle; his name is Antoine Chatenet. Fighting against all the odds of their geographic destiny, they found each other, and together they are known as Ginkgoa. A French/American band with a sound as diverse as their background, best described as high-octane electroswing, Ginkgoa has been the top draw at globalFEST in New York City. The duo aims to make French songs with a distinctly American vibe and American songs with a French touch, with time periods and inspirations constantly crossing and colliding. Their diverse mix of influences has one thing in mind: making generations of people dance, sway, and sing along to the melodies that stick, long after Ginkgoa has left the building.

Decorative Arts in the Age of Victoria

Rienzi, the MFAH house museum for European decorative arts, presents special exhibitions twice a year. Decorative Arts in the Age of Victoria showcases objects from both the MFAH and Rienzi collections. During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), the British Empire reached its geographical, financial, and industrial peak. The art, architecture, and design created in those years were inspired by European artistic traditions as well cultures across the globe. The Great Exhibition of 1851 was organized by the queen’s husband, Prince Albert, to display the wonders of industry and manufactured products from around the world. Decorative arts were shown in revivals of Classical, Renaissance, and Rococo styles—sometimes copied quite closely, but often combined or reinterpreted to create a variety of novel forms and motifs. Historical decorative techniques were also adapted to modern manufacturing processes. Decorative Arts in the Age of Victoria features works of art that illustrate the dual drives of the British to historicize and modernize their world. Among the examples on view are porcelain, glass, jewelry, miniatures, wallpaper, and furniture.

Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950

Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950 looks at how Cuba’s revolutionary aspirations for social utopia—and subsequent disillusionment—shaped 65 years of Cuban art. The exhibition brings together more than 100 of the most important works of painting, graphic design, photography, video, installation, and performance created by more than 50 Cuban artists and designers. Anchored by key moments of 20th- and 21st-century Cuban history, Adiós Utopia is the most comprehensive and significant presentation of modern and contemporary Cuban art shown in the United States since 1944, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented Modern Cuban Painters. Although many artists have emigrated from Cuba to live and work abroad, Adiós Utopia focuses on the untold narrative of those artists who remained in Cuba or whose careers took off after Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. Through a selection of pivotal artworks—created in each of six decades since 1950—the exhibition explores Cuba’s artistic production through the lens of utopia, both its construction and its deconstruction. Adiós Utopia introduces U.S. audiences to key events in Cuban history and explores how this history affected individual artists, shaped the character of art produced on the island, and conditioned the reception of Cuban art both in Cuba and abroad.

KURIOS-Cabinet of Curiosities

Step into Cirque du Soleil's curious cabinet of an ambitious inventor where the visible becomes invisible, perspectives are transformed, and the world is literally turned upside down. In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a Seeker discovers that in order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, we must first learn to close our eyes. In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker is convinced that there exists a hidden, invisible world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams lie waiting. A collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor in an attempt to ignite the Seeker’s imagination, his curios jump to life one by one before his very eyes. Under the Big Top (The Grand Chapiteau) at Sam Houston Race Park. Family-friendly show but strollers are not permitted inside the tent. Tickets purchased for children must have an adult seated beside.

Ron Mueck

Ron Mueck draws upon memories, reveries, and everyday experience as he portrays his subjects with extraordinary compassion. What makes his sculptures exceptional is the manner in which he balances realism with the unreal. Frequently spending more than a year conceiving and making each figure, Mueck captures every feature with astonishing detail. The naturalism of his work, however, is undercut by his calculated play with scale: Some figures fill a gallery, whereas others stand no more than three feet high.

Critical Mass Friday

Critical Mass Houston is a casual bike ride starting from downtown Houston and going wherever. Cars rule the road every day, but one day a month we get together to celebrate our love for bicycles and have fun riding our bikes. This is generally a slow-paced ride where persons of all skill levels can participate. People start gathering around 6:30 and we roll out around 7:15pm. We’re usually at our final location between 9:30 – 10pm, and each time we try to finish some place fun and hang out for a while.
