The Little Mermaid

Based on one of Hans Christian Anderson’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above and bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order in the ocean’s depths.

19th Annual Dickinson Festival of Lights

In the Beginning...The Dickinson Festival of Lights began as an idea between two neighbors, John Montgomery and Robert Morgan in 1998. Shortly after the Idea was formed, the images began to take shape and soon those images were transformed into steel objects wrapped with lights, creating some of the very displays that you see at the Festival today. The Festival began with 100,000 lights and encompassed the triangle of property where the Gazebo sits at HWY 3 and 44th Street. In 2003 the Festival was moved to Paul Hopkins Park to accommodate the growing popularity and room for new displays that were added.John and Robert's goal was to provide a family oriented event that would invoke the spirit of the holidays into people's lives. These two gentlemen left a wonderful legacy to Dickinson, a tradition that we can all be proud of and one we can hope to continue for years to come.

Go Yell It On The Mountain

The Second New Greater Lesser Mount Zion Bethel Church (SNGLMZBC) has been around for 75 years, but now a nearby mega church wants to knock it down to build the Heavenly Palace Bowling Lanes. The flock of SNGLMZBC decides to draw attention and rally the city to save their church by staging a big, showy, heart-warming Christmas pageant. They recruit an outside theatre director to help, but traditions and characters proceed to clash. However, in the soul-warming spirit of the holiday, great music and the story pull everyone together. Conceived by Obsidian Theater’s Artistic Director Tom Stell, Go Yell It On The Mountain is a warm-hearted celebration of human spirit and great gospel music.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

The Herdmans are six scrawny children ( Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie and Gladys) who are notorious delinquents in their community. Among other things, they lie, steal, smoke cigars (even the girls!), and hit little kids. The kids basically raise themselves. Their father walked out when the youngest was two years old, and their mother works double shifts at the shoe factory. The story is narrated by Beth Bradley, a girl in Imogene Herdman's class. Beth's brother, Charlie, unwisely lies to Leroy Herdman, saying that he doesn't mind Leroy stealing his dessert at school because Charlie gets all the snacks he wants at Sunday School. This leads to all six Herdmans showing up at church the next Sunday for the first time in their lives. Beth's mother is put in charge of the Christmas pageant when the original leader, Mrs. Helen Armstrong, fells and breaks her leg. The announcement for the auditions happens to be on the day the Herdmans show up at church, and, avid movie fans that they are, the Herdman's volunteer (and threaten) their way into all six of the main parts. In spite of the Herdmans never having heard the Christmas story before (and wanting to change the script so they can hunt down the evil King Herod) and in spite of never making it through a complete rehearsal, the show does go on and turns out to be, as everyone says, the best Christmas pageant they have ever seen. Nobody can put a finger on the precise reason, but it has to do with the fact that the Herdmans just act like real people, probably like the characters in the Bible story really were, rather than the radiant, haloed saints that are usually portrayed.
