When Beethoven learned that Napoleon had crowned himself emperor, he tore up the title page of the symphony he had written for the French general—but he didn’t tear up the music. Houston favorite Robert Franz conducts Beethoven’s thrilling Eroica, the “heroic” symphony that sparked a musical revolution. Sphinx Competition winner Annelle Gregory also performs Barber’s lushly melodic Violin Concerto, and in a nod to Canada’s sesquicentennial the program opens with a charming work by British-Canadian composer Healey Willan.
