Mission & History
Discovery Green's mission is to operate an urban park that serves as a village green, a source of health and happiness for our citizens, and a window into the diverse talents and traditions that enrich life in Houston.
Discovery Green - Before
Discovery Green - After
Discovery Green is a 12-acre park created by a public-private partnership between the City of Houston and the non-profit Discovery Green Conservancy. In its first three years, the park welcomed more than three million visitors and hosted more than 800 public and private events. The Discovery Green Conservancy works with hundreds of programming partners to present three dynamic seasons each year. Most of the events at Discovery Green are FREE and open to the public. The Conservancy raises all the funds needed for the programming and ensures that the park remains an accessible and incomparable public gathering space.
Discovery Green was conceived not only as a public park, but as a landmark to attract convention revenue to the City, and as an anchor for downtown development. By all accounts, the park is meeting its goals. In less than four years, the site that became Discovery Green was transformed from an undeveloped, concrete eyesore into one of the most beautiful and vibrant destinations in the City of Houston.
Admission to Discovery Green is FREE, and the vast majority of the events in the park are also free. Activities that require a fee are clearly listed on this website. You are welcome to bring picnics, lawn chairs, blankets and even your dogs to the park. Please note that outside alcohol, glass containers, tables and pop up tents are prohibited. Food, beer & wine are available for purchase at The Lake House Cafe.
Discovery Green is open daily (including holidays) from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Hours for events vary. Areas of the park may be closed occasionally for maintenance or private events. The Gateway Fountain is open daily from 9am-7pm (weather permitting). Click here to see park updates. The Park Office is open daily from 9am-6pm. See park map.
With more than 400 events per year, there is something for everyone at Discovery Green! Most events are free and open to the public.
You are welcome to bring picnics, lawn chairs, blankets and even your dogs. There may be events at the park that have licensed space and may have different rules. See the specific event listing.
Please note that outside alcohol, glass containers, tables and pop up tents are prohibited. Food, beer & wine are available for purchase at The Lake House Cafe.
Discovery Green is an outdoor facility so some events may be affected by the weather. Performers, times, dates and other schedule changes may occur. Visit our Live Webcam Page or call 713-400-7336, press option #1 for event updates.
