The Children's Museum of Houston and Phillips 66 invites early birds to come hunting for book worms with us this September! We're looking to kick off this school year right and get kids hooked on books all year long.

SEPT. 23 READ STRONG ALL YEAR LONG


The Children's Museum of Houston and Phillips 66 invites early birds to come hunting for book worms with us this September! We're looking to kick off this school year right and get kids hooked on books all year long by engaging them in interactive literacy activities!

Special Events: 

  • Chris Bridge Reading and Arts: Get inspired by several books including "Read to Me, Some Heart, and Spring is Coming," and help create a dynamic art project for author's new book.
    • Event time: 11-11:30 a.m. at Parent Resource Library.  
  • Story time with Meteorologist Justin Stapleton: Enjoy a special reading along with Houston's own KPRC-TV Meteorologist. 
    • Event time: 12-12:30 p.m. at Parent Resource Library. 
  • Express Theatre: Enjoy an improv storytelling performance called "Let's make a play today," and complete the story by adding your creative magic touch.
    • Event time: 1-1:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. 
  • Wade Smith Story Time:  Catch up with former Houston Texans football star during a reading of "Smitty Tackles Bullying," followed by a brief motivational speech.
    • Event time: 2-2:30 p.m.  in Brown Auditorium.  
  • Sydney Sunshine Reading and Talk: Sit back and enjoy an inspirational reading, which focuses on self-esteem and loving oneself. 
    • Event time: 3-3:30 p.m. at Brown Auditorium. 

ON GOING ACTIVITIES


  • Color Resist Rainscapes:  Create a magical wonderland using liquid watercolors inspired by Jon J Muth's illustrations "Come On, Rain"  at Alexander Art Academy.
  • I Know the Rainbow:  Visualize a rainbow through diffraction grating sheets that filter white light, just like a rain drop then record the colors you see at EcoStation.
  • Water cycle in a bag: Learn about the water cycle by observing it on a smaller scale and labeling a diagram at EcoStation.
  • Paper Plate Panda:  Create a panda mask based from Jon J Muth’s famous panda Stillwater at Junktion.
  • Origami Frog: Design an Origami Frog based after Muth’s book "City Dog, Country Frog" at Junktion.
  • Monster Crown: Create your own Monster crown at Junktion.
  • Galactic Storytime: Blast off to far away worlds and journey with us during galactic storytime at Parent Resource Library.
  • Box it Up: Using a flat piece of paper can you make a cub? predict if a flat shape will make a 3D shape when folded up at Math Cart
  • Cabbage Chemistry: Using red cabbage juice and other food products,  you will learn how to test the liquid in a cabbage for analyzing pH levels at Power Science Lab.
  • Iron in Cereal:  Explore how to test iron in your morning cereal and learn about the important role iron plays in the human body at Power Science Lab.
  • Testing Proteins:  Test for proteins in different foods using a special technique known as Piotrowski's test at Power Science Lab.
  • Oily Fats:  Learn how to compare fat levels in different cooking oils at Power Science Lab.
