Hanukkah Heroes & Lights | Kids Out and About Houston

Hanukkah Heroes & Lights

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 12/18/2020
Join the J this Hanukkah for Hanukkah Heroes & Lights! This new program will feature eight nights of virtual celebration with stories, candle-lighting, and the recognition of some local heroes who have brought light and healing into our community during the pandemic.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately.
Each night of Hanukkah will be hosted virtually by a different synagogue, in conjunction with the J. First, the synagogue rabbi will tell a holiday story or offer a meaningful holiday message. Next, the synagogue will recognize and honor a local MacCovid (read: Maccabee + Covid) hero from their community--someone who has gone above and beyond during the past nine months to help Houston battle the coronavirus pandemic. Finally, participants will be invited to bring their own Hanukkah menorahs and light candles along with the rabbi as he/she leads everyone in the blessings. At the end there will be some time for socialization. Each evening will last approximately 30 minutes, from 5:30-6:00 p.m. nightly throughout Hanukkah. Schedule TBA.

Hanukkah Heroes & Lights is part of the J's commitment to continue building and strengthening Jewish community during this pandemic. We are thrilled that these eight congregations around Houston have decided to partner with us and host an evening: Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Congregation Brith Shalom, Congregation Emanu El, Congregation Or Ami, Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism, Temple Sinai, and United Orthodox Synagogues. While open to everyone, the program is particularly designed for Houston adults to connect with their Jewish heritage and with each other during the holiday. Participation will be free for all, with registration required.
