The holiday season is finally here and HMNS is breaking out the jolly cheer! The smell of fir trees is in the Grand Hall, we’ve brought back everyone’s favorite, Trains Over Texas, and we have a few special holiday events planned at both our Hermann Park and Sugar Land locations. It’s a magical time to visit HMNS, so make sure you don’t miss out on all the joy and excitement.

Trains Over Texas

November 24, 2021 – January 2, 2022
Included with permanent exhibit hall admission

Create holiday memories by travelling across Texas by model railroad in this scratch built O-scale model. The multiple trains crisscrossing the state will visit important and unique places in the state’s geology and physiography. This exhibit (the size of a tennis court) is the largest indoor O-scale model railroad in Texas. Don’t miss what is sure to become a holiday tradition!
This exhibition was organized by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Local support provided by the Carruth Foundation, Inc., Glen A. Rosenbaum, and Union Pacific Foundation.

In the Cockrell Butterfly Center

Guardians of the Garden – Ladybug Release
Every weekend starting November 20, 2021

The Cockrell Butterfly Center needs protecting- do you have what it takes? Every weekend starting November, you can release ladybugs in the Center for only $5 to help fight off plant eating buggies in the tropical rainforest. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office.*

The Mystery of the Christmas Star
November 19, 2021 – January 2, 2022 | 3:00 p.m. daily

Journey back over 2000 years to Bethlehem as we seek to discover a scientific explanation for the star the wise men followed to find the baby Jesus. This modern retelling of the Christmas story is sure to charm and captivate audiences of all ages. Winner of five Telly Awards.

Behind the Scenes Tour – Trains Over Texas

Hand Lettering for Beginners   *Makes a great present!*

Join VP of Education, Nicole Temple, as you discover the basics of hand lettering in this class for beginners. You will learn the fundamental strokes, work on developing a personal style, experiment with different styles of pens and then try your hand at lettering on an agate to take home, which makes a great gift!

Santa’s Workshop

Take a trip to Santa’s Workshop, where you will discover what it’s like to be a part of his holiday team! Create and assemble your own Christmas wreath and ornament to keep for yourself or give as a gift. Plus, don’t forget to snap a picture with Santa!

Santa Claws

Sink your claws into the holiday spirit during this fiercely festive event. Craft some Christmas goodies, preserve your hand forever in wax, and meet the dinosaurs that really love the holidays with a special guest appearance by Wild Dinosaurs Entertainment!

Christmas with Charro

Saturday, December 11 | 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
$10 per person

Have you heard the news? Charro the Green Iguana will be filling in for ol’ St. Nick as he takes a well-deserved break this season. Join us on December 11 from 11-1pm in the HMNS Grand Hall for Christmas with Charro. Santa Charro will be ready to pose for holiday photos, jot down last minute present requests, and preen for his adoring fans. Tickets are $10 per person to meet Santa Charro and include making an ornament with a preserved butterfly from the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Spots are limited so reserve your ticket now.

Story Time with Santa

Santa Claus is coming to HMNS! Sit down with us at 2pm and 3pm on December 11 for Storytime with Santa as St. Nick himself reads us his favorite book, “The Dinosaurs’ Night Before Christmas”. After each reading, Santa Claus will autograph each copy of “The Dinosaurs’ Night Before Christmas” purchased during the reading and chat with the children.

Breakfast with Santa

Santa’s coming! Santa’s coming! And he’s joining us for breakfast, too. Join us for a morning of festive fun as you get your photo taken with Santa and enjoy a delicious meal.

The Grinch Movie Party

See the mean one himself, Mr. Grinch, try to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville, and no need to steal your own snacks like the Grinch: We will be supplying the popcorn! Join us for a screening of the Grinch (2018) in the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre as we celebrate the holiday season. Previous to the film, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., members can enjoy an exclusive crafting experience and meet the Grinch in person. Don’t forget to take a picture with the biggest grouch of the season.

Cookies with Santa

If you love cookies as much as Santa, you don’t want to skip this event! Join us for a morning of festive fun as you decorate your own holiday cookies with icing and sprinkles. Show off your creation to Santa as you snap a picture with the big man himself.

Our annual family friendly event, presented by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is your chance to catch Santa during an early visit to Sugar Land. Enjoy holiday crafts in Santa Land, the tradition of cookies and milk, and a take away photo with Santa & Mrs. Claus. Be sure to bring your own camera to snap some candids, too! A festive way to support HMNS at Sugar Land’s mission of science education, and expansion of sensory-friendly programming. Purchase tickets here.
