Homestead Heritage Day
Through captivating exhibits and demonstrations, the lifestyle of early settlers is recreated at Jones Park. Visitors of all ages will enjoy watching staff members and volunteers transform the Redbud Hill Homestead into a living, working settlement of the mid-1800’s. Sample old-fashioned foods like cornbread from the bread oven, jerky from the smokehouse, and hoecakes cooked over an open fire. Children of all ages can attempt old-fashioned games such as marbles, tabletop nine-pins, intricate metalwork puzzles, a corn cob toss, and much more. Other youth activities include a petting zoo, making various crafts, washing clothes on a washboard, and churning butter. Check out costumed re-enactors as they demonstrate spinning and weaving, cooking, leatherworking, woodworking, blacksmithing, and display black-powder weapons of all types including pistols and cannons. In addition, Jones Park’s outdoor stages will showcase festive folk music! And don’t miss members of local Civil War re-enactment groups as they offer a glimpse into the regimented lifestyle that often took place during the Civil War. Visitors can even try on period costumes and have their picture taken in the covered wagon.
