JASMINNE MENDEZ is a Houston-based poet, playwright, translator, and award-winning author of several books for children and adults. Her YA memoirs Island of Dreams and Islands Apart: Becoming Dominican American chronicle her experience coming of age as an Afro-Latina. About Islands Apart, Kirkus writes, “At times poignant and at others heartbreaking this volume is sure to empower those who share the pressures of forced assimilation.” Her debut picture book Josefina’s Habichuelas was released last year, and she translated Amanda Gorman’s bestselling picture book Change Sings into the Spanish edition La canción del cambio. Her debut poetry collection City Without Altar was a finalist for the Noemi Press Book Award for Poetry.

She joins us to share her new novel in verse Aniana del Mar Jumps In, the story of a 12-year-old Dominican American swimmer who gets diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. About the book, David Bowles writes, “Aniana del Mar Jumps In is about trusting our own bodies when they tell us what they can and cannot do, trusting our own hearts when they point the way, and trusting one another when we say who we are and what we need.” Natalia Sylvester adds, “Beautiful in its honesty and vulnerability, this is a powerful story about dreams and bodily agency that sings from the heart.” Mami forbids Aniana from returning to the water, but her doctor believes that swimming along with medication might help Aniana manage the disease. Will Aniana ever be able to swim again?

Jasminne is the co-founder and Program Director of Tintero Projects and the co-host of Ink Well, a literary podcast by Tintero Projects and Inprint that features emerging and established Latinx writers. When she is not writing or napping in her hammock, Jasminne enjoys playing with her daughter, swimming in the ocean, practicing yoga, baking cupcakes, and laughing with her partner Lupe Mendez.

***Please note that the book signing will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon entering the theater, people wishing to have books signed will be given a number, and the book signing will take place in numerical order after the on-stage presentation.***
