Meet Beau Lister!

YMCA of Greater Houston

Sandor "Beau" Lister has worked for the YMCA of Greater Houston in youth development since 2009. As the Youth Program Director for the Thelma Ley Anderson Family YMCA in Alvin, Beau enjoys offering a safe place for children to come after school and during the summer. Parents appreciate his ability to turn a game into a learning experience; he is known for helping everyone learn from a play call by talking it through with the kids.

What does your job entail?

I oversee both Child Care and Youth Sports programs. This includes Summer Camp, Spring Break Camp and Afterschool Care. Youth Sports requires organization of practice schedules, game schedules, and staff schedules. All staff have to be trained on a regular basis to ensure both programs function safely and keeps each program well maintained. Our main focus is to grow our programs to impact more people in our community.

lister2What is the most fun part of your job?

That I go home at night knowing that I am working for something much greater than myself. Empowering children is priceless! Organizing programs that are safe and that puts a smile on a child’s face is my driving force to keep going. Helping families and letting them know that it takes a village to guide our youth and they’re not alone in the process.

How did you get started in your field of work?

I applied for a summer day camp job in May of 2009 and eventually worked my way up to becoming a Director.

What are some of your favorite events at your organization?

Summer Camp, After School, and Youth sports (officiating games)

What kind of unusual things have you done in the course of your job there?

I would have to say going above and beyond for our community. A lot of people don’t really get that nowadays.

Tell us a little about your life outside of your work?

Like to spend time with my family and watch my daughter grow. Believe it or not I actually like to play video games (when I have time). I enjoy doing little projects around the house.

What other interests do you have in the community?

I recently became a member of the local Lions Club. I am interested in supporting the community in any way I know how and use my resources to help.

beau1Do you have any new events in the upcoming year?

Summer is always a fun time at the YMCA. We have day camp and swim lesson sessions starting in early June.

What are some great ways that parents can get kids interested in coming to the YMCA?

Come visit our facility and take a tour. Set up a time where your family can see what’s taking place in our organization. We love seeing new faces in our facility --  it gives us a chance to tell our story!

Tell us a few fun facts about yourself:

I can draw, I played the trumpet in middle school, played college baseball, and I love sharp cheddar cheese.
