All summer long, you can see bugs unlike ever before – up to 60 times larger than their normal size! From the 7-foot ladybug to the 33-foot tarantula, you’ll see these bugs in great detail as each is made to look exactly like its smaller counterpart. As you meet our Big Bugs, you’ll also learn the important role each bug plays in nature and how we can all help to protect each species. From pest control and food maker to crop protector and forest recycler, we could not live without these bugs.

Thursday, June 21 and July 19, the Zoo will close early for After Dark: A Summer Series. Last entry at 4 p.m., gates close at 5 p.m.
The fascinating lives of bugs will be unveiled in this unique experience with our expert bug keepers. They want to WOW you with an opportunity to touch some of our Bug House residents, visit the behind-the-scenes areas to learn how they care for these animals and share personal stories of what Houston Zoo is doing to save insects all over the world.

Thanks to TXU Energy, the Houston Zoo is staying open late, so you can enjoy the animals in the cooler evening weather. Join us for Evening Chill every Friday & Saturday evening from June 22 through August 18. From 5 to 8 p.m. guests can enjoy added music and fun family activities that are sure to entertain kids and adults alike! All activities are included in Zoo admission and are free for Zoo Members.
Family Nature Club is an opportunity for families to get outside together and explore nature! Each program takes place at various parks and nature centers around Houston, and is a great chance to find a new hangout for your herd. Meet like minded families, and know that you’re providing your little ones meaningful opportunities for exploration and play.
On the first Saturday of each month (first Sunday in November), Members may enter the Zoo one hour before opening to the general public. Enjoy cooler weather and see the keepers prepare enrichment and animal areas all around the zoo.

In honor of World Tiger Day, join us for a Tiger Spotlight on Species event! See our resident Malayan tigers celebrate
with some special enrichment items in their habitat. Attend talks and learn all about tigers as well as palm oil, a key ingredient affecting Malayan tigers in the wild due to its effect on deforestation.
Begin your journey into nature! This program is designed specifically for 18 to 23 month olds and their favorite adult to spend time connecting with the natural world and each other. We will explore the day to day lives of our animals while giving children the opportunity to discover their environment. This program includes activities intended to develop fine motor skills, and will also feature the chance to meet and touch animals up close in each class.
Set out on an expedition to uncover how some of our animals interact with their environment, and then see if you can act just like them! In this program, 4 to 5-year-old children along with their favorite adults will learn the insides and out of some our Zoo animals. Come interact with the natural world, play together and experience our animals.
