Brave Little Company is theatre for everyone. We create and produce works about, with, and for all of Houston's kids and their grown-ups, reflecting Houston's diversity and creating theatre the way kids play.

Brave Little Company is theatre for everyone. Founded in 2013, BLC received the 2023 TYA/USA National Award for Artistic Innovation, reflecting its national significance in creating new works for young people. BLC creates theatre the way kids play. When children engage in unstructured, imaginative exploration, their creativity is at full power, and they are at the center of the story. BLC’s plays may include found object puppetry, sensory storytelling, STEAM and literacy themes, and a meaningful role for the audience in driving the story. BLC has an extensive record of local, national, and international theatrical partnerships, and of collaborating with Houston’s diverse communities.

BLC has four main areas of work: creating and producing original, touring public and school performances in Houston and across Texas, with a focus on dual language work; THE BIG “US” PROJECT, a theatre initiative created by 100 members of Houston’s refugee and immigrant communities; Wish You Were Here, a creative collaboration with students with disabilities; and classes, camps, workshops, and residencies serving the needs of all kids and educators.

Founder Troy Scheid has over 23 years’ experience as a director and theatre educator. She studied at Rice University, the University of Houston, the pioneering UK company Oily Cart, and Lincoln Center Education. She directed world and regional premieres in Houston, New York, and Chicago. She is an associate member of SDC, the directors’ union, and the author of a forthcoming book inspiring children to use theatre to make their dreams full-sized.
