This Family Day celebrates new beginnings through an exploration of spring holidays in Asia. Activities, demonstrations, and performances will explore Holi, the Hindu festival of colors;Nowruz, the Persian New Year; Setsubun, the Japanese spring festival; Shogatsu, the Japanese New Year; and Songkran, the Thai New Year.
Activity Zone
Indian Springtime Banners
Create a decorative felt-lined banner to celebrate the animals of India and the beauty of Holi, known as the festival of colors. Recommended for ages 6 and older.
Japanese Doll Creations
Learn about the Japanese holiday of Hinamatsuri, also known as Dolls’ Day, and create a festive figurine. Recommended for ages 6 and older. This activity is led by the Consulate General of Japan in Houston and Japan-America Society of Houston.
Nowruz Egg Dyeing
Decorate your own egg, a Persian New Year tradition over two thousand years old. Recommended for ages 4 and older. This activity is led by the Zoroastrian Association of Houston.
Sakura Painting
Paint a beautiful landscape in the spirit of hanami, the Japanese custom of viewing cherry blossoms in the early spring. Recommended for ages 7 and older. This activity is led by the Consulate General of Japan in Houston and Japan-America Society of Houston.
Performances and Demonstrations
Folkloric Near Eastern Music
Listen to traditional music from Ancient Persia and the Persian diaspora in celebration ofNowruz, the Persian New Year. Recommended for all ages. This performance is presented by the Zoroastrian Association of Houston.
Indian Bhangra Dance
Witness the fast-paced dance of bhangra, popular in Punjab state, which will celebrate the festival of Vaisakhi. Recommended for all ages. This performance is by Suneri Bhangra.
Nowruz Haft-Seen Display
Discover the origins and meaning behind this Persian New Year table setting celebrating the advent of spring. Recommended for all ages. This presentation is by the Zoroastrian Association of Houston.
Thai Fruit Carving
Witness ornate fruit decoration, known as kae sa luk, popular in Thailand. Recommended for all ages.
Thai New Year Dance
In celebration of Songkran, the Thai New Year, enjoy a traditional dance and learn a few steps from members of the Houston Thai community. Recommended for all ages. This performance is presented by Wat Buddhavas of Houston.
