Children’s Museum of Houston celebrates the power of dreams through MLK-inspired peace rally and special activities Gardere oratory competition winner to recite speech Monday, January 19 at noon.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed for us to live in a world where we would “not be judged by the color of [our] skin, but by the content of [our] character.” Take a trip to the Children’s Museum of Houston to honor civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., and his acclaimed “I Have a Dream Speech” which rocked the nation during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963. Join our special performers in the auditorium and don’t forget about your own dreams!

 

SPECIAL EVENTS:

 

  • Spirit of Sankofa Chorale:  Will sing African American spirituals.
  • Caryakid Award:Honor Houston leader and model for Dr. King's beliefs Dr. Edith Irby Jones.
  • Gardere Oratory Speech Recital:  Listen to the uplifting words of this year’s winner.
  • Peace Rally Led by Kid’s Committee:  March down Kid’s Hall in celebration of our civil rights.
  • “I Have a Dream Speech” Rendition:  Listen to the speech that changed history.
  • Young Harmonies of Houston:  Get moving to the inspirational sounds of this choir.

 

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

 

  • Dream Machine:  Animate characters from your imagination at Inventors’ Workshop.
  • Dream Clouds:  Display big dreams for the world in our Dream Wall at Junktion.
  • What is Peace?:  Make a world symbol of peace at Junktion.
  • The Star Promise:   Take a pledge to be fair and kind to others with a promise at Junktion.
  • To The Stars:  Mae Jeminson was the first African-American woman to travel to space.  Take your imagination to the stars and beyond with your own straw rocket at Science Station.
  • Cells! Small, But Mighty!:  Marie Maynard Daly was the first African-American woman to be awarded a PhD. in chemistry.  Inspire your individuality making a cell at Science Station.
  • Our Wondrous Eyes:  Patricia Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe to help treat cataracts. Treat your eyes to the wonders of 3D images at Science Station.
  • I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr.:  Get inspired as we read Dr. King’s motivational message of freedom, equality, and peace at the Parent Resource Library.
