Obsidian Theater (formerly Obsidian Art Space) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in March 2010. Since its inception, Obsidian has provided an affordable space for visual and performing artists’ creative works. Obsidian seeks to provide an environment in which artists’ creativity and imaginations may thrive. Named the Best New Arts Venue of 2011 by the Houston Press, we continue to serve Houston artists and the historic Heights community with our intimate and versatile black box space. Obsidian is also committed to developing and producing daring theatrical works. Most recently, Obsidian brought Houston audiences the Regional Premiere What Every Girl Should Know by Monica Byrne, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Houston Area Women’s Center. In 2014, OAS presented the Regional Premiere of Ruined by Lynn Nottage and was honored with the 2014 Houston Press Theatre Awards for Best Actress (Qamara Black) and Best Sound Design (Tom Stell and Mary Faler); and was also nominated for Best Play, Best Director (Tom Stell), Best Supporting Actor (Ateseko Factor) and Best Supporting Actress (Uju Edoziem).
