*The event has already taken place on this date: Tue, 10/11/2022
Have you ever wondered what it takes to get started in debate? Our workshop allows students to experience a glimpse of how to build their argumentation and reasoning skills with our award-winning coach. 5th through 8th-grade students will learn the basics of spontaneous argumentation and success factors in a fun and interactive way!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

This workshop  is designed for 5th-8th grade students to focus on building confidence and skills to develop and organize thoughts to speak in settings with little or no preparation, through simple argumentation format of SPAR debate. SPAR is short for Spontaneous Argumentation debates. The term connotes, too, some of the jousting and practicing that we think of as “sparring.”

SPAR Debate is a beginner friendly format for getting students up and arguing.SPAR Debate can be used with academic issues, as a way to begin to immerse students in curricular content, or with non-academic (“fun”) issues, as a way to focus on debating format and individual argumentation skills.

The ability to communicate clearly, think critically and frame constructive arguments allows students to display confidence and professionalism. Students will also develop presentation skills through mini-lectures, games, activities and speaking practice.

This workshop is led by a coach with 7+ years of competitive and coaching experience and former captain of the UCSD Speech & Debate Team. Upon completion of this workshop students will have the opportunity to practice their skills at our annual internal tournament on Nov 18th, try our other workshops or enroll in our semester based classes.
